This is prime real estate. Put your most important, high-search-volume keyword at the very beginning of your title. Etsy gives more weight to words at the front. So ‘Personalized Dog Mom Mug — Custom Coffee Mug Gift for Dog Lovers’ is going to outperform ‘Cute Coffee Mug — Personalized Dog Mom Gift’ every single time.

  1. Your Tags (All 13 of Them!)

You get 13 tags and you should use every. single. one. Each tag is a chance to get found. Use a mix of broad keywords (‘dog gift’) and specific long-tail phrases (‘funny dog mom birthday gift’). Don’t repeat what’s already in your title — that’s wasted space.

  1. Your Item Description

Etsy says descriptions don’t directly affect search ranking, BUT they DO affect whether a customer stays on your listing or bounces. Weave your keywords naturally into your description — it helps with Google search too, which can send external traffic to your shop.

How to Actually Find Good Etsy Keywords (Step by Step)

Okay, here’s the part you really came for. No paid tools required for this — just strategy.

Step 1: Start with Etsy’s Search Bar (It’s Free Research!)

Open Etsy, go to the search bar, and start typing your product. Don’t hit enter — just watch what Etsy auto-suggests. Those suggestions are GOLD. They’re based on what real shoppers are searching for right now.

Type ‘dog mom’ and you might see: dog mom gift, dog mom mug, dog mom svg, dog mom sweatshirt, dog mom jewelry. Each of those is a keyword worth exploring.

Write them all down. This is your starter keyword list.
